Michael Ramey

My name is Michael Ramey and I am a clinical psychologist. I have worked in Metropolitan Detroit, in private practice, for 12 years. The focus of my practice has been providing psychotherapy for individuals and couples. In psychotherapy the patient explores thoughts, feelings, memories and experiences that are complex and often difficult to face. Art often takes the viewer or participant on a very similar journey. Art provides gravity and connects to the deepest parts of our humanity. Psychology and art share the ability to teach us something about what it means to be human and for that reason I am fascinated by both.

Most of my adult life I have lived in Metropolitan Detroit, where there is a   rich community of artists and an innate value is placed on creating things. I have been a photographer since college and often enjoy blending my role as a psychologist and photographer. I am fascinated by the influence of the unconscious within art.  As a photographer I attempt to capture images that convey both a manifest (conscious) message and a latent (unconscious) message. I am also interested in mythological symbols within art and contemporary life.
